左宗棠(1812年11月10日-1885年9月5日)，汉族，字季高，一字朴存，号湘上农人。晚清重臣，军事家，政治家，著名湘军将领，洋务派首领。左宗棠少时屡试不第，转而留意农事，遍读群书，钻研舆地、兵法。后竞因此成为清朝晚期著名大臣，官至东阁大学士、军机大臣，封二等恪靖侯。一生经历了湘军平定太平天国运动，洋务运动，镇压陕甘回变和收复新疆等重要历史事件。(Zuo Zongtang (November 10, 1812 – September 5, 1885), the han nationality, who styled himself as "Jigao", "Pucun" and "Xiangshang Longren". He was an important minister in late Qing Dynasty, strategist, statesman and famous high-ranking military officer of Hunan Army and the leader of Westernization Group. In his youth, Zuo Zongtang came from repeated failure of tests, shifted their attention to farming, reading books of all kinds and delved into geography, strategies. In the later, he became famous minister in the late Qing dynasty, and served as Grand Secretary of east pavilion, grand minister of state and appointed as class II Kejinghou (a kind of title of nobility in ancient dynasty). He went through some important historical events, such as Taiping Rebellion pacified by Hunan Army, Westernization Movement, repression of Shan Gan Muslim Rebellion and the war of recovering Xinjiang and etc.)
